Replying without saving

The conversation already exists in your chat list, labelled with the number. Open it, type, send. The prompt to add the sender to your contacts is a convenience, not a requirement, and dismissing it changes nothing about the thread.

Working out who it is

1. Read the country code against the dial code list — it narrows things quickly.
2. Check whether you gave your number out recently: a delivery, a marketplace listing, a form.
3. Ask plainly: "Sorry, who is this?" A legitimate sender answers in one line.

A profile name is typed by its owner and proves nothing. Treat it as a hint, never as identification.

When not to reply

Certain openers are almost always fraudulent: an accidental "hello?" from a foreign number, a remote job paying per review, a package fee, a family member asking for money from a new phone. Replying at all confirms the number is live. Report and block instead.

If someone claims to be a person you know, contact them on a channel you already have. Never move the conversation to a number the message itself supplies.

Keeping the number without a contact

Some unknown numbers turn out to matter — a courier, a plumber, a buyer. Saving each one as a contact means it syncs to every device you own and outlives its usefulness by years.
